Important Reminder From Your Dentist: Brush the Back of Your Teeth!

man brushing teethYou might think that your oral hygiene routine is complete. After all, you brush twice a day and floss daily. You use a mouth rinse, and you visit your dentist at least twice a year. However, you might still be missing something. Many people forget to brush the backs of their teeth, the part that faces the tongue and roof of the mouth. Neglecting this part of your pearly whites can have devastating consequences for that gorgeous smile of yours, so your dentist in Stevens Point is here to remind you to be thorough when you’re brushing!

Why Do People Forget?

Mistakes are part of human nature. Many people focus solely on the fronts of their teeth when they’re brushing — after all, that’s the part that other people are most likely to notice, and it’s the part we see when we give ourselves a charming smile in the mirror. You might also spend a lot of time brushing the chewing surfaces of your teeth, especially the molars.

Not brushing the backs of your teeth is an innocent mistake, but it can lead to some big-time unpleasant consequences. Plaque and food particles can collect there, and you could very well end up with painful decay. You may eventually need fillings, a root canal, or even an extraction!

Tips for Thoroughly Cleaning Your Mouth

When you’re brushing, your goal should be to clean as much of the surface of each tooth as possible. Here are some little reminders and tips that will help you make sure that your daily routine doesn’t neglect any part of your pearly whites:

  • Use a timer when you’re brushing your teeth. It should take you about two minutes total to get a thorough clean. Spend 30 seconds brushing the outer surfaces of your bottom teeth and 30 seconds doing the inside. Do the same thing for your top row.
  • Go easy on your chompers. If you realize that you haven’t been brushing the backs of your teeth, don’t go into panic mode and start scrubbing them vigorously. Be gentle when you’re brushing so you don’t accidentally damage your enamel.
  • Use short strokes. Try to use tooth-wide strokes when you’re brushing. Longer strokes might cause you to miss tiny bits of food that get lodged between your teeth.
  • Take care of your tongue. The tongue is another part of the mouth that some people forget to clean. However, it can be a hot-bed for harmful bacteria, which can transfer onto the backs of your teeth and lead to decay. Brush your tongue and use a tongue scraper.
  • Floss and rinse. Flossing, along with the use of a fluoride-containing mouth rinse, can give you that extra boost of clean you need.

Your smile is one of your best assets. Protect it from every angle by being sure to brush the backs of your teeth!
